Cammalleri, Canadiens embarrass punchless Rangers

Hockey Betting Lines

01/23/2010 - Montreal, QC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Michael Cammalleri had two goals, his team- leading 25th and 26th of the season, and picked up two assists to help the Montreal Canadiens exact a measure of revenge against the New York Rangers with a 6-0 pounding at Bell Centre.

The Rangers scored six unanswered goals against Montreal for a 6-2 win last Sunday at Madison Square Garden, but were held off the board as the Canadiens' Jaroslav Halak made 32 saves for his third shutout of the year.

Scott Gomez, Benoit Pouliot, Tomas Plekanec and Maxim Lapierre also tallied for the Canadiens, who have won two straight after losing three in a row.

New York starting goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was chased from the crease after allowing four goals on 15 shots in less than 27 minutes. Matt Zaba, making his NHL debut, yielded two power-play goals on 16 shots the rest of the way.

The Rangers were shut out for the second consecutive game and fourth time in their last seven contests overall.

Gomez opened the scoring at the 9:05 mark of the first period. Lundqvist made a right pad save on Jaroslav Spacek's blast from the point, but Gomez was able to bury the juicy rebound.

Montreal erupted in the middle stanza, scoring three times in a span of 3:42.

Cammalleri snapped a wrister that beat Lundqvist on the glove side at 2:35, then Lapierre lit the lamp two minutes later, his first goal in 29 games. Cammalleri found the net again at 6:17, and let go a shot that deflected in off Pouliot with nine minutes remaining in the second period.

Plekanec capped the offensive onslaught midway through the third period with a deft backhander to the short side.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
