Oden, Buckeyes edge Spartans

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

01/28/2007 - Columbus, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Greg Oden poured in 19 points and grabbed six rebounds as fifth-ranked Ohio State survived a scare and edged Michigan State, 66-64, at Value City Arena.

With 15.3 seconds remaining, Oden was fouled and hit 1-of-2 from the line to put the Buckeyes up by two. Michigan State had one last chance to win it, but Maurice Joseph's three with just over a second left bounced off the rim.

Oden ended just 4-of-10 from the floor, but hit on 11-of-14 from the line while Jamar Butler scored 12 points and dished out six assists for the Buckeyes (18-3, 6-1 Big Ten), who have won five in a row since losing to No. 3 Wisconsin on January 9. Daequan Cook also donated 11 points.

Ohio State, which has won 21 consecutive home games, finished 44 percent shooting.

Drew Neitzel led the Spartans (17-5, 4-3) with 29 points and Raymar Morgan added 14 in defeat. Goran Suton donated eight points and pulled down eight boards for Michigan State.

The Spartans, which also shot 44 percent in the game, had a four-game winning streak snapped.

With the game tied 9-9 early in the first half, Ohio State ripped off 11 of the next 13 points -- capped by Cook's three-pointer for a 20-11 edge at the 10:43 mark.

Minutes later, Oden drained two free throws to put the Buckeyes up 30-19, and then Cook hit another trey with 47 seconds left for a 43-23 halftime advantage.

Michigan State, though, went on a 21-7 burst to cut within six at 50-44 with 12:09 left. The Spartans continued to chip away at Ohio State's lead and made it a 65-64 affair when Neitzel converted twice from the charity stripe with 1:41 to play.

Game Notes

Ohio State shot 37 percent (7-of-19) from three-point range while Michigan State converted 27 percent (4-of-15) from beyond the arc...The Spartans still own a 59-48 edge in the all-time series.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
